Devon_GoldDevon Gold, President of the Board of Trustees

There aren’t many schools like Carey. Distinguished by its commitment to and expertise in early childhood and elementary education, a faculty dedicated to knowing your children and what makes them unique, administrative leaders recognized for their vision and impact, and a community bound by a shared understanding of the value of a strong home-school partnership, Carey is one-of-a-kind. Our great school is thriving, because of all who contribute on a daily basis to the exceptional student experience, but also because of a strong tradition of philanthropy among our families and disciplined financial oversight by the Board of Trustees. Today, we enjoy a position of financial strength because of the hard work and commitment of our dedicated Advancement office, school leadership, fundraising volunteers, and all of you. Your ongoing, generous support has resulted in the school’s solid foundation, and on behalf of the board, I am incredibly grateful.

The 2013-14 school year was yet another financially successful year for The Carey School. Our fund to live by, The Carey Fund, broke records once again, raising over $500,000 for the first time in the school’s history. We continued our stellar record of participation among families, faculty, and staff, as well as our extended family of grandparents, alumni, and friends of the school. At the same time, we continued the broad fundraising appeal for our Carey Forward capital project, surpassing by 100% the funds raised in the school’s prior capital campaign. And along the way, we maintained discipline around spending and lived within our means. We should be proud of these results and the incredible spirit of giving they represent.

Thanks to your generosity, the school continued to invest in the program and people that make Carey the singular experience it is. Among those areas of investment were increased support for faculty professional development, expansion of student support services, meeting the needs of current and applicant families for financial aid, improvement of outdoor and recreation spaces and equipment, and upgrades and additions to technology resources, just to name a few. The success of our Carey Forward capital campaign enabled us to transform the campus by adding nearly 5,000 square feet of learning and gathering spaces so that a greatly improved campus greeted our children for the start of the 2014-15 school year. Finally, because we are committed to the long-term sustainability of our wonderful school, last year we again worked to grow our endowment by allocating 10% of annual fundraising to this important reserve. Currently our endowment has reached nearly $1 million. Recognizing there is work to be done in this area, the 2014-19 Strategic Plan charges the board to develop and implement an endowment strategy to ensure Carey’s future for generations of students and families to come.

Our 86th year of inspiring curious, confident and joyful learners was indeed an exceptional one. We built buildings, while continuing to build our exceptional program and community, and it simply would not have been possible without your engagement and your generous support. Thank you for being part of our special school.
