The 2015-2016 school year was another year of change for The Carey School. The Thinkering Lab was completed, providing a new dimension to the school’s program and expanding creativity opportunities for our students. We did not stop there! While not in our initial plans for the year, the Hillside play area was designed and largely completed. Amazingly, through the continued generosity of the Carey community, we were able to fund the Hillside project in 2015-2016, a year ahead of what we initially anticipated.
The Carey School remains in a solid financial position, with enrollment at capacity and strong operating reserves. The school had another record year for Annual Fund contributions, up 19% from the prior year, and record fundraising through the Carey School Parent Association, up 18%.
Operating expenditures increased 3.4% from the prior year, despite continued pressure from rising health care insurance costs. Even including expenditures for the Hillside project and the debt service cost of $339,000, the school generated an operating surplus of $128,000, which was added to operating reserves.
