The Carey School Board of Trustees welcomed three talented new board members this year: Gary Kiang, Kathy Layendecker, and Julie Lee. Each new board member began a three-year term on July 1, 2016. This small class of new trustees brings a wide range of skills and life experiences to our board, including backgrounds in finance, education, management consulting, serving other nonprofit organizations, and serving on other independent school boards. The Carey Board of Trustees looks forward to working with these talented individuals as we continue our work to uphold the Carey School Mission and pursue the bold initiatives in our Strategic Plan.

Gary is the parent of one Carey student. Gary currently serves on the Advancement and Buildings & Grounds committees. He has previously served on the Investment sub-committee, as Carey Walkfest co-chair, part of a Carey Mentor Family, and has helped with class auction projects. Gary is also an active participant in Carey Dads’ Night Out gatherings. Gary previously worked in investment banking at Merrill Lynch in New York and currently works in investment management at Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo. Gary is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Systems Engineering from the School of Engineering and a BS and MBA in Finance from the Wharton School.

Kathy is the Chief Financial and Operating Officer of Castilleja School. She previously served as the Head of School at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, an independent boarding/day school in Minnesota, where she has been instrumental in leading the development of a new master campus plan, launching the Engineering Center of Excellence Program, and overseeing the growth of innovative pedagogies such as blended learning and design thinking. Prior to Shattuck, she worked at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, OR, for seven years as the CFO and Interim Head of School. Before focusing on schools, she spent a number of years in the private sector as a CFO. She received her BA from Stanford University and MBA from Yale.

Julie is the mother of 3 children at Carey. She has served on the CSPA Executive Committee as President and Vice President, as an Annual Fund Ambassador, on the Carey Mentor Committee, the technical team of the Carey Auction, and as a dedicated Room Parent. Julie and her family especially enjoy the strong sense of community, commitment, and learning that radiate from the families, faculty, and the administration. She and her family have made so many great friends so far. Her kids love everything about Carey, and she will funnel that love and energy into her role on the Board and in serving the school.
