By Kristy Cowan, President of the Board of Trustees
The Carey School is an exceptional place for innumerable reasons. This Annual Report highlights one of the factors that makes Carey so unique: the incredible generosity of our parents. Carey School experiences, such as Spaghetti Dinner, learning in the Thinkering Lab, playing on the Hillside and participating in Walkfest would not be possible without the selfless dedication of time, talents, and treasure from our parent community. The culture of philanthropy at Carey is strong and allows our school leaders to think big and imagine a future full of possibilities for our students. For this, we are incredibly grateful.
The Carey School boasts a longstanding tradition in the Annual Fund of 100% participation from our parents, faculty and Board of Trustees. Parents have contributed to our fundraising initiatives at historic levels, raising over $650,000 in the 2017-18 Annual Fund and $180,000 in our spring auction “Fund A Need.” This unanimous and generous support speaks volumes about our community’s confidence in the great things that are happening on Carey’s campus.
The Board of Trustees, along with our Head of School, Duncan Lyon, and his skilled Administrative Team, spent the 2017-18 year planning for and investing in Carey’s future. We made an historic contribution to Carey’s endowment, developed building plans to complete Carey’s Master Facilities Plan, and embarked on the initial stages of a capital campaign. The Board’s focus on the long-term financial health of The Carey School bodes well for our children and for generations of students to come.
The 2017-18 year brought many new faces into our leadership team. The Board welcomed 9 new trustees: Heidi Chang, Jennifer Chung, Lindsay Folk, Jack Herndon, Allison Keenan, Bill Lenihan, Mike Markson, Sarah Suleman, and Caroline Tsao. Moreover, The Carey School welcomed a new Chief Financial Officer, Susan Loveall, a new Director of Development, Tracy White-Urrutia, and a new Director of Admissions, Ida Gruber. We are grateful for the energy, creativity, and vision that these new team members brought to their roles.
As evidenced in this Report, our school’s financial health is strong. Under the solid leadership of our Head of School, Duncan Lyon, and with the Board’s close oversight, The Carey School’s future promises to be even brighter.
With my enduring gratitude,
