By Duncan Lyon, Head of School

In many ways, the 2018-2019 school year was similar to so many before it. The energy on campus, the excellence in teaching and learning, and great Carey traditions would be familiar to anyone who has enjoyed time on this campus. So, when an outstanding Operetta closed the curtain on the school year, the sustained ovation symbolized the warm support that has long characterized our community.

However, the summer of 2019 was unlike any other before it as we gained an increase to our conditional use permit, obtained re-zoning to enable new construction, and demolished the last of the buildings from the 1950s. And, we successfully embarked on our aptly named Expanding Possibilities capital campaign setting a course to our $5M fundraising goal to construct a two-story building. We are grateful for our generous families who are helping bring this vision to life.

As we enter a new decade, we do so with the notable accomplishment of earning a full, seven-year term accreditation from the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS). Fueled by a passion for this distinct place, the hard work of our faculty, staff, administration, and trustees stood out to the visiting committee of educators. Here is a notable paragraph from their report (April 2019):

The board, administration, faculty, and parents demonstrate their commitment to a climate of caring that supports learning for all students. Working together for the betterment of all children is a goal that stakeholders are passionate about and the success of this objective at The Carey School is evident. Making the world a better place is a value that community members hold dearly and do their best to uphold each and every day.

May these words always characterize this fine school.
