By Gary Kiang, President of the Board of Trustees

The 2018-19 school year was a memorable and historical one for The Carey School. We celebrated our 90th anniversary, allowing us to reflect on a very rich history that started during the Great Depression – one that represents strength, resilience and prosperity, where a community of people whose core values of respect, kindness, and personal responsibility remain as part of the mission today.  Our roots have helped shape us and live on in our students, parents and faculty every day.

We were incredibly thankful this year to our parents, Board and staff for continuing the longstanding tradition of 100% participation to the school’s Annual Fund. This year, we raised $643,000, an incredible $93,000 more than our goal.  Our spring auction raised $220,000 for our Fund A Need which will go to support financial aid.  This unanimous and generous support speaks volumes about our community’s confidence in the great things that are happening on Carey’s campus.

The Board of Trustees, along with our Head of School, Duncan Lyon, and his skilled Administrative Team, spent the 2018-2019 year planning for and investing in Carey’s future. We completed our new five year strategic plan, finalized building plans for our new building and courtyard, and launched our new Expanding Possibilities capital campaign. The Board’s focus on the long-term financial health of The Carey School bodes well for our children and for generations of students to come.

The Board welcomed 6 new trustees during 2018-19:  Vijay Culas, Mina Fisher, Eric Kim, Curt Metzger, Lindsay Ramsay, and Consuela Stewart.  Moreover, The Carey School welcomed a new Controller, Aileen Mitchner and a new Director of Communications, Resham Bharwani. We are grateful for the energy, creativity, and vision that these new team members brought to their roles. As evidenced in this Report, our school’s financial health is strong. Under the solid leadership of our Head of School, and with the Board’s close oversight, The Carey School’s future promises to be even brighter.

With my enduring gratitude,

Gary Kiang
